Freshen up your home with a good deep cleaning. Tackle the dirt and clutter before it piles up. This will save you time and lessen your stress as you prepare for guests to arrive. It will also keep cleaning tasks manageable as you get ready for the big day.
Deep Cleaning Defined
Deep cleaning is more thorough than a standard cleaning. It digs deeper into dirt, grime, soap scum and gunk, while sanitizing and disinfecting surfaces.
You can make DIY cleaning products to tackle the dirt, or call in a cleaning service to do the job. If you are doing it yourself, follow these deep cleaning tips to ensure success.
Deep Clean the Living Areas
Go through each room and clear the visible clutter. Get rid of it or move it behind closed doors to go through later.
Clean surfaces from high to low. Clean the ceiling, trim, and light fixtures; then tackle the walls, the rest of the trim and baseboards. Use warm water mixed with a drop of dish soap on a microfiber mop or duster. In bathrooms, add a little white vinegar to the soap and water mixture to stop mold and mildew.
Deep clean the windows. Vacuum the sills and tracks, and then lightly spray the window with glass cleaner. Let it sit for a minute and then wipe it off. Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to clean blinds and shades. Fluff up curtains in the dryer.
Remove the dust from hard surfaces, like wood furniture and shelves, with a furniture cleaner or polish and a soft cloth. Use a lint roller to collect dust on lampshades.
To deep clean floors, move the furniture out of the way, then use the crevice attachment on the vacuum to reach dirt in corners and along baseboards. Clean a hard floor with a microfiber mop and appropriate cleaner. Use a professional-grade cleaner to freshen up carpet.
Deep Clean the Kitchen
To keep your kitchen in prime condition, polish cabinets and put shelf liners inside that can be replaced later. Thoroughly clean the inside of appliances and the surrounding area as well. Clear off the countertops and give them a good scrubbing along with the backsplash. Wipe down pantry shelves too and remove crumbs.
Deep Clean the Bathroom
To keep the powder room smelling nice, remove and wash the shower curtain. Be sure to check the label for instructions. Clean up shower doors using heated distilled white vinegar and baking soda. Use a squeegee to keep the shower clean longer and switch to glycerin soap. Clean and organize vanity drawers and cabinets and toss out junk. Same goes for medicine cabinets.
Deep Clean the Bedroom
Freshen up the bedroom by vacuuming the furniture and dusting the bed frame and photos. Dust under your electronics and launder throw pillows and bedding.
DIY Deep Cleaners
Make your own cleaning supplies using products that are likely already in your pantry. Distilled white vinegar, baking soda, dish soap, citrus fruit and rubbing alcohol are among the most useful. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and is great for getting rid of buildup, rust and hard water stains. Baking soda absorbs odors and also can be used as a gentle surface cleaner on counters, sinks, ovens, stoves and tubs.
