As the weather grows warmer and summer approaches, it’s time to get out into the fresh air and make the home maintenance rounds. Once deep freezes and heavy snowfall concerns are in the rearview mirror, there are a few steps every homeowner should take in terms of exterior upkeep. And with that, here are some home maintenance tips to keep in mind this summer!
Revamp the Windows
Now that you can open them without getting a face full of icy wind, it’s time to check up on your windows! Give them a good wash inside and out, especially if your household has issues with pollen and spring allergies. You don’t want those pesky particles sticking around any longer than they have to. It’s also a good idea to take the opportunity to check the sealing around your window frames and recaulk where necessary.
Check Your Outdoor Structures
From swing sets to patio furniture, your outdoor furnishings are going to see a lot more use in the coming months than they have since last fall. Make sure everything’s in good shape– no screws loose or rusted bars, no moldy cushions or unstable posts. If you have a garden shed, also make sure to check the integrity of the walls, roof, and floor if applicable. Moisture buildup is also a possibility, so look for any mold or mildew growth as well.
Inspect Your Driveway, Walkways, and Masonry
Water expands as it freezes, which can cause cracks and fissures to appear in concrete and asphalt during the colder months. You’ll want to take advantage of the mild weather and fill those gaps now before they grow worse. If you have a garage, it’s also worth checking the sealing where your driveway meets the floor– recaulk if/where any cracks show.
Be Wary of Summer Storms
High winds and rainfall can wreak havoc on shingles, siding, and gutters, so make sure you’re checking for damage after storms and keeping the gutters clear. Heavy rain and flooding can also loosen the dirt surrounding tree roots, so keep track of any older trees close to your home.
Give Your Home a Bath
We can’t let a group of home maintenance tips go without adding power washing to the list! Now is the time to clean all the pollen, dirt, bird poop, mold, mildew, tree sap, unfortunate insects, and general grit from your fencing, decking, playground equipment, masonry, concrete walkways, and siding. Give your property a fresh new look for the new season!
