Watercolor Crafts to Brighten Your Afternoon

Painting isn’t just for the professionals! Take some time to give your brain a break this summer and jump into some of these simple but beautiful watercolor crafts. Art is a great way to relieve stress while honing your creative skills– and it keeps the kids entertained on rainy afternoons! Here are a few watercolor craft ideas for artists of any level or age.

Touch the Sky

One of the most beautiful aspects of watercolors is the ability to play with color values and blending. Play around with using more or less water for your paints and create gorgeous sunsets, sunrises, and everything in between. Emulate the way colors melt into one another in nature to craft a gorgeous display. Want to add a finishing touch? Draw a city skyline along the bottom of the page in black Sharpie or crayon before you get the paper wet or after it dries. If you want to get really involved, try recreating Van Gogh’s Starry Night!

Under the Sea

Pro tip: pick up a pack of oil pastels along with more watercolor paints on your next trip to the craft store. These pastels are a ton of fun to use on their own, but the oils have the extra benefit of repelling water– which means they also repel water-based paint. Try drawing a deep sea scene in oil pastels before adding some blue and green watercolors on top– you won’t have to worry about painting within the lines with these, as your pastel lines will remain intact!

Paper Plate Butterflies

For the little ones in the family, grab some popsicle sticks, markers, and paper plates to create a flutter of beautiful butterflies. Cut two wings out of a paper plate and decorate them with your watercolors. Glue them to a popsicle stick and add some eyes and other touches to bring each member of your flock of flying wonders to life! Remember that pipe cleaners make awesome antennae or legs, if you like.

Unique Snowflakes

Bring out the oil pastels and draw the outline of a snowflake on your canvas, paper plate, or cardstock. Then add blasts of color to make the snowflake stand out from the background and create a winter wonder! If you have some Frozen fans in the family, these are great tie-ins to the icy imagery found on screen. Green and blue or pink and purple are most common in that famous ice castle scene featuring the song we shall not name…Regardless of your familiarity with Disney animations, these snowflakes are a beautiful reminder of winter’s beauty in the midst of summer.

We hope these watercolor crafts provide some well-earned fun and relaxation this summer!
